Product information
Agriculture is working hard to continuously improve the conditions under which livestock are kept. In the poultry sector, too, the question of how the species-specific behavior of animals can be given greater consideration in husbandry is being intensively investigated. In addition to the consequences arising from animal welfare issues, environmental and resource protection requirements must also be integrated into sustainable husbandry systems.
The rearing of pullets occupies a special position in the poultry industry as an intermediate stage in the production process of consumer egg production. The demands on laying hen husbandry are constantly increasing. Accordingly, the environment in which pullets are kept, which are housed in laying hen houses after around 17 weeks of rearing, must also be developed further.
This brochure is aimed at interested parties from practice, consultancy, business, science and politics who would like to take a closer look at modern methods of future-oriented pullet rearing. It shows under which housing conditions and management factors chicks and pullets can exercise their species-specific behavior and at the same time be reared with optimum biological performance. Based on the needs of the animals, housing models were developed that ensure the well-being and health of the animals and at the same time optimize their biological performance.
The brochure was produced by the working group “Overall Farm Husbandry Concept for Poultry”. The interdisciplinary team consists of nationwide experts in the field of pullet rearing from the chambers of agriculture, state institutes and offices, research institutes as well as the Kuratorium für Technik und Bauwesen in der Landwirtschaft e.V. (KTBL), the Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft e.V. (DLG), the Dresden University of Applied Sciences, the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, the Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Sciences and the Thüringer Tierseuchenkasse.
